Current Data on Child Care Salaries and Benefits in the United States.

This report compiles the most recent salary and benefits data available for the U.S. Child care workforce. Data for average wages of preschool teachers and child care workers are presented for each state. Comparisons between median hourly wages for child care jobs and other occupations are presented graphically. Initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels for improving child care salaries or benefits are delineated. Appendix 1 contains current compensation and turnover data from selected states and Canadian provinces collected in 1997 or later. Appendix 2 provides a compilation of reports detailing salary data collected prior to 1997. The report points to the need for more consistent, reliable, and comprehensive data collection about the child care workforce. (KB)
