Pupil Membership and Related Information, Fall 1999.

Information is provided about the enrollment of Colorado's public schools as of fall 1999. At that time there were 708,109 students in Colorado's public schools, an increase of 1.3% over the previous fall membership. Fall membership grew by 7.9% from fall 1995 to fall 1999. Beginning in 1990, student membership each year has surpassed the previous peak in 1972, and in 1999, as in previous years, membership continued to rise in both elementary and secondary grades. Between 1995 and 1999, fall membership in the public schools increased by 35,457 (19.7%) for minority students, and 3.4% for white students. Native Americans, Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics represented 30.5% of the fall 1999 student membership. Enrollment continued to increase in the state's 10 largest school districts, which, taken together, enrolled 55.3% of the total student membership. The Denver metropolitan area includes 386,828 (54.6%) of the state's total membership in public schools. Colorado's graduation rate for the class of 1999 was 79.9%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from rates reported for the class of 1998. Student membership data is reported in five tables. (SLD)
