Foundations of Science: Using Technology To Support Authentic Science Learning.

In a traditional science classroom, only a portion of students walk away with a genuine understanding of the material, and even fewer are able to apply the concepts they have learned to events in their own lives. Foundations of Science (FOS) was developed in a cooperative effort between the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor public schools to allow all high school students to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of science and technology, and to help them develop into responsible, scientifically-aware members of the community. This paper discusses the process of authentic science learning, describes a local environmental intervention in which high school students participated, and explores lessons learned from the FOS experience.
