The New Learning Guide: Education Opportunities, Alternatives and Enhancements for Maritime Communities.
Peters, Brian; Hudson, Pamela Forsyth; Kehoe, Karly
The Margaree Education Coalition and the New Learning Project were formed as a result of a Nova Scotia (Canada) community's fight to keep its local school open in the face of government plans to consolidate schools. It is their belief that stability in public education is accomplished through the accommodation of diverse, community-specific solutions, and that individual communities are best equipped to determine the most relevant educational opportunities for their students. This guide is a catalog of basic information useful to individuals, communities, and governments wishing to improve education. The first chapter defines "new learning" and discusses community and education, the origins of the New Learning Project, and its objectives and format. Chapter 2 outlines the opportunities for enhancement to education that are currently available within the public school systems of the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The third chapter describes alternatives to public schools, including private schools, charter schools, and home schooling. The fourth chapter discusses ways to build communities and strategies for effective action for change. Chapter 5 presents a proposal for a community operated public school. Three appendices present a comprehensive resource list concerning education enhancement groups, public education, literacy support, charter schools, private schools, and home schooling; public education structures in the Maritime Provinces; and an annotated bibliography with 39 references.
