Students Transfers to Public and Private Colleges in California and Out-of-State.
This document describes an effort to measure City College of San Francisco (CCSF) student transfer rates by matching social security numbers (SSNs) of CCSF students with SSNs of students tracked by the National Student Loan Clearinghouse (NSLC). The NSLC has a student database that includes approximately 70% of all U.S. postsecondary institutions. First time, credit CCSF students who enrolled at CCSF in 1993, 1994, or 1995 and then transferred to another institution--community college or baccalaureate institution--were tracked, with the following preliminary findings: CCSF's transfer rate to all baccalaureate institutions (in-state, out-of-state, private and public) is well above the national average (29% for 1993, 27% for 1994, and 20% for 1995); the greatest number of students transferred to in-state baccalaureate institutions, most of which were located in the northern part of the state; significant numbers of students transferred to another community college, often in a neighboring district; and, Heald Business School was the largest proprietary school popular with CCSF transfer students. Document includes summary totals of transfer students by cohort year, state, region and type of transfer institution. (PGS)
