Teacher Training in the Czech Republic.
Delamere, Patricia
This paper describes the procedures for developing and delivering a training program designed to enhance the language ability and teacher training skills of lead teachers of English in the Czech Republic. The described program was funded by PHARE, a European Commission funding source dedicated to strengthening and enhancing the skills, knowledge, and abilities of Eastern European educational and administration systems and structures. The goal was to develop the linguistic ability and methodological skills of 1000 Czech teachers of English at the K-12 level. The inception, development, and delivery phases of the project are described. Much of the paper is devoted to the evaluations of the Czech teachers participating in the program. It was found that they were at first surprised and unsure of how to react to a program that asked them to contribute and reflect upon their previous teaching experience. Interest is expressed in obtaining further training on computer uses in the classroom, special training for teachers of special needs children and minorities, and more opportunities for teacher research projects. Numerous graphics and tables are included. (KFT)
