Child Maltreatment: An Introduction.
Miller-Perrin, Cindy L.; Perrin, Robin D.
Since the 1960s, when the research community, grassroots organizations, mental health professionals, and lawmakers became involved in the treatment of child maltreatment, progress in the field has been rapid. This book draws together research literature that describes the magnitude and consequences of child maltreatment. It is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to child maltreatment for undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Six chapters begin with an interview with a known expert, providing examples of the various philosophies used and training counselors typically receive in the field. Information on further details and specific topics are listed in the appendix. Chapter titles include: (1) "History and Definitions of Child Maltreatment"; (2) "The Study of Child Maltreatment: Theoretical and Methodological Issues"; (3) "Physical Child Abuse"; (4) "Child Sexual Abuse"; (5) "Child Neglect and Psychological Maltreatment"; (6) "Other Forms of Child Maltreatment"; and (7) "Looking Toward the Future". Appendix A is "Resources Concerned with Child Maltreatment"; and Appendix B is "Related Readings for Victims, Professionals, and Others." (Contain 19 tables, 1 figure, and over 775 references.) (JDM)
