Improving Student Achievement in Alaska. Alaska Goals 2000 Annual Report, 1997-98.
Alaska State Dept. of Education, Juneau.
Alaska Goals 2000 is part of a coordinated, statewide effort to improve public education for all students in Alaska. In 1997-1998, 90% of Alaska's federal funding was used to fund grants to local school districts, and 10% was used to fund state-level activities through the Alaska Department of Education. During 1997-1998, curriculum frameworks and related resource kits were completed for skills for a healthy life, and standards for culturally responsive skills were developed and disseminated. Overall, efforts continued on developing performance standards and assessments for grades 3, 6, and 8, and student performance standards for high school reading, writing, and mathematics were approved. Alaska educators were given access to training and materials for curriculum development to integrate academic, occupational, and employability skills. Considerable work was done to develop professional standards, school excellence standards, and family, school, business, and community networks. Advances were made in the use of integrated technology in Alaska's schools. A summary of the school improvement activities of each of 28 school districts is included. (SLD)
