Social Studies: Ohio's Model Competency-Based Program. [Revised].

This model is designed to provide direction for school districts to develop their own competency-based education programs. It is not intended as an instructional guide. The guide's ultimate purpose is to enhance the quality of social studies learning (history, sociology, geography, economics, government) in Ohio schools. The personnel responsible for curriculum development and competency-based education who use the model must be able to view the entire program holistically, yet work to facilitate implementation of the component parts. The model's introductory sections, while useful for social studies teachers, are designed to provide direction for those responsible for developing the social studies program. The model includes the following for grades prekindergarten through 12: (1) suggested instructional objectives; (2) suggested performance objectives; (3) recommended strategies for assessments; and (4) a recommended program of intervention services. The primary purpose of the pre-K through high school social studies program is to help young people understand through the study of the past and present what it means to be a human being in society and to develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world of finite resources. This integrated study is articulated across grade levels to achieve the purpose of the program--the promotion of civic competence. Contains a glossary, a 21-item bibliography, and two appendices.
