Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.
Fowler, Marilyn; Meyers, Margaret E.; Morris, Pam Bell; Gonzales, Peggy Freedson; Uphaus, Anita
Following adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in 1998, new prekindergarten curriculum guidelines were developed. These voluntary guidelines articulate what 3- and 4-year-olds should know and be able to do and provide a means to align prekindergarten programs with the TEKS curriculum. The guidelines are intended to assist educators in making decisions about curriculum content and in defining and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that will provide opportunities for young children to achieve knowledge and skills. Specific goals are delineated for prekindergarten children in the following content areas: (1) language and early literacy (including listening comprehension, speech production and speech discrimination, vocabulary, verbal expression, phonological awareness, print and book awareness, and motivation to read); (2) mathematics (including number and operations, patterns, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and classification and data collection); (3) science (science processes and concepts); (4) social studies (including history, culture, community, geography, and economics); (5) fine arts (art, music, and dramatic play); (6) health and safety; (7) personal and social development; (8) physical development (including physical movement, gross motor development, and fine motor development); and (9) technology applications. The document concludes with acknowledgments for those involved in the development of the guidelines. (KB)
