The fact book provides information about the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), which consists of 13 community colleges and 15 technical colleges. It presents the strategic plan, core functions, timeline, statistical facts, Board of Regents, President's cabinet, and instructional programs. The mission of KCTCS is to improve the quality of life and employability of the citizens of the Commonwealth by serving as the primary provider of postsecondary education programs, training and services. In fall 1999, the number of students pursuing credit enrollment was 45,988. During the academic year of 1998-1999, 94,074 students were enrolled for workforce training/continuing education. One significant piece of KCTCS continuing education focus is fire and rescue training. In 1998-99, KCTCS served 60,061 fire and rescue students who worked for 1,091 agencies. Credentials granted during 1998-99 are as follows: 3,138 associate degrees; 2,626 diplomas; and 581 certificates. The 1999-2000 budget was $330 million. In order for Kentucky to attain the goal declared by the General Assembly to reach the national average in quality of life by the year 2020, KCTCS must be a comprehensive system that ensures reasonable access to transfer programs, workforce training, and remedial and continuing education.
