e-Learning: Putting a World-Class Education at the Fingertips of All Children. The National Educational Technology Plan.
Department of Education, Washington, DC. Office of Educational Technology.
This document presents an updated national educational technology plan. Chapter 1 summarizes the goals set forth in the 1996 national educational technology plan and describes the Virtual High School Project. Chapter 2 addresses support for teacher use of technology, teacher and student access to technology, use of digital content and networked applications for teaching and learning, and technology's impact on teaching and learning. Chapter 3 discusses helping students to comprehend difficult-to-understand concepts, helping students to engage in learning, providing students with access to information and resources, better meeting students' individual needs, and looking forward. Chapter 4 covers the five national education technology goals: (1) all students and teachers will have access to information technology in their classrooms, schools, communities, and homes; (2) all teachers will use technology effectively to help students achieve high academic standards; (3) all students will have technology and information literacy skills; (4) research and evaluation will improve the next generation of technology applications for teaching and learning; and (5) digital content and networked applications will transform teaching and learning. Appendices include a description of the process of developing the plan, a list of contributors, and endnotes. An educational technology timeline of highlights during the Clinton Administration, 1993-2000, is also included. (Contains 66 references.) (MES)
