This booklet is designed to serve as a general reference source about the employment-related provisions of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs for individuals with disabilities and educators, advocates, rehabilitation professionals, and counselors who serve people with disabilities. The first part of the booklet explains how to reach the Social Security Administration and the components of the SSDI and SSI programs. Information is provided on: eligibility, necessary records, filing for benefits, the definition of disability, self-employment, payment amounts, health insurance coverage, wait-time for benefits, and reviewing benefits. An overview of work incentive provisions in SSDI and SSI is then provided, including impairment-related work expenses, subsidies and special conditions, unincurred business expenses, unsuccessful work attempts, trial work periods, extended periods of eligibility for reinstatement of benefits, continuation of Medicare coverage, the Earned Income Exclusion, the Student Earned Income Exclusion, the Plan for Achieving Self-Support, and reinstating eligibility without a new application. Special rules for individuals who are blind are also explained. The booklet closes with an explanation of additional help with health care for people with disabilities, a glossary, and addresses for social security regional offices. (CR)
