Accommodations: Assisting Students with Disabilities. A Guide for Educators.

This manual describes different types of accommodations educators can use to include students with disabilities in general education classrooms, including accommodations relating to instructional methods and materials, assignments and classroom assessments, time demands and scheduling, learning environment, and use of special communication systems. Chapter 1, "Accommodations," discusses what accommodations are, who is eligible for accommodations, and how Individualized Education Program (IEP) decisions about accommodations are made. Chapter 2, "Making Instruction More Effective," describes conspicuous steps and strategies teachers can take to accommodate different learners. It discusses using graphic organizers, the Big Accommodation Model, and scaffolding. The following chapter,"What Can You Change?" addresses specific instructional accommodations for students with limited reading abilities, difficulty understanding lectures and discussions, visual or hearing impairments, or difficulty understanding mathematical concepts and processes. It also addresses accommodations that can be made in scheduling and the classroom environment. The final chapter, "Get Started by Planning," discusses incorporating accommodations in the IEP, anticipating students' needs, and planning for lessons. Appendices include an annotated list of resources for accommodations and Florida State Board of Education Rules related to accommodations. (CR)
