This edited volume brings together a number of chapters on key issues of educational administration and policy facing schools and school systems in varied parts of the world. There is a growing international interest in and respect for the attributes and achievements of students, schools, and school systems in different parts of the world. Asian educators look toward the Anglo-American world for models of school reform and improvement, while concurrently, Western educators are looking at the school systems of East and Southeast Asia--particularly those of Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong--whose students have consistently outperformed Anglo-American students on international achievement tests in mathematics and science. A number of themes run through the contributions to the book: school performance, school effectiveness, leadership, management, school design, improvement, and change. A major concern of the contributors is the legitimacy of applying theories, ideas, policies, and practices emanating from one societal culture and transposing them into others with different cultural, political, and economic contexts.
