Internet Uses and Gratifications: Understanding Motivations for Using the Internet.
Ko, Hanjun
In this study, the uses and gratifications theory was applied to investigate the Internet users' motivations and their relationship with attitudes toward the Internet as well as types of Web site visited by users. Subjects were 185 college students who completed a self-report questionnaire. Four motivations and five types of Web sites were discovered via factor analysis. Differences among heavy, medium, and light users of the Internet were also analyzed in terms of their motivations, types of Web sites frequently visited, and attitudes toward the Internet. Study results suggest that users' motives are significant predictors of positive attitudes toward the Internet, and there exist associations between certain motivational factors and types of Web sites.
