Symposium Proceedings.
Bezanson, Lynne; Hiebert, Bryan; Watts, Tony
The four theme papers prepared for the International Symposium on Career Development and Public Policy served as an organizing framework for discussion. The theme papers were on the following topics: (1) Preparation for the World of Work; (2) the Impact on Career Delivery Services of Information and Communications Technology; (3) Connecting Career Development and Public Policy with Counseling Process Issues; and (4) Career Development and Public Policy: The Role of Values, Theory, and Research. The agenda for the symposium maintained a balance between providing information and creating opportunities for discussion. The first two days were devoted to setting the context and clarifying issues. The third day focused on creating a vision for the future that reflected the major policy and program planning elements that emerged. The goal was to create an international action plan that contained national follow-up action components. Key issues for the future include the importance of building a bridge between policy and practice; creating a clear definition of policymakers; promoting practitioners to become involved in creating policy; and understanding the significant role of the press in influencing policymakers. An edited synopsis of the presentations and discussions is provided. (JDM)
