National Centre for Vocational Education Research, Leabrook (Australia).
This publication provides summary information about the publicly-funded vocational education and training (VET) sector in Australia. Information is presented for 1999, with the inclusion of 1998 figures for some tables. The information is based on data collected under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information and Statistical Standard. The report contains 15 tables and 5 graphs illustrating the statistics. Some of the highlights of the report include the following: (1) 1.65 million students undertook vocational programs in 1999, an estimated increase of 7 percent since 1998; (2) of Australia's working-age population, 13 percent participated in VET; (3) the number of students in VET increased by 70 percent from 1990 to 1999; (4) young people aged 15-24 years made up 38 percent of the students and took 54 percent of the hours of training in 1999; (5) the number of students and annual hours remained stable at about 75 percent of all VET students and 85 percent of all annual training hours; and (6) the increase in publicly-funded VET activity was achieved with little change in total operating expenditures.
