The 12 Rules of Grandparenting: A New Look at Traditional Roles and How To Break Them.

Tremendous social changes have left many grandparents unsure about what type of grandparent role is useful today. This book challenges grandparents to examine traditional grandparent beliefs to see if modifications might enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the role. The book's introductory chapter discusses societal changes influencing families, details changes in parental and other family roles, describes the primary tasks of grandparents, and presents 12 traditional grandparent rules or beliefs. The remainder of the book explores each of the 12 rules and encourages grandparents to question them. The chapters (and rules) are: (1) "Grandparents Should Be Cheerful"; (2) "Grandchildren Should Listen to Their Grandparents"; (3) "Grandparents Should Love To Baby-Sit"; (4)"Grandparents Should Know about Life"; (5) "Grandparents Should Love To Spoil"; (6) "Grandparents Should Be Full of Fun Ideas"; (7) "Grandparents Should Love All of Their Grandchildren the Same"; (8) "Grandparents Should Love To Help Out"; (9) "Grandparents Should Hate To Discipline"; (10) "Grandparents Should Know How To Care for Sick Kids"; (11) "Bragging Should Be Done in Moderation"; and (12) "Being a Grandparent Is Always Fun." The book's appendix includes resources for grandparents, and adolescents' comments about what they remember about their grandparents. (KB)
