German Cataloging Rules Facing the 21st Century--RAK Heading for Internationality and Online Operability.
This paper describes the current state and future development of RAK (Regeln fur die Alphabetische Katalogisierung), the German cataloging rules. The following topics are addressed: (1) the German cataloging landscape, including rules for descriptive cataloging, regional networks, format, data suppliers, and the rules landscape; (2) insufficiencies of the present situation, including demands related to reduced financial support, as well as the REUSE project to investigate the differences between RAK and AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition); (3) RAK2 (2nd edition) as it is in progress, including title terminology and headings, hierarchies, author definition, entries under persons and corporate bodies, encoding, and entity adaptation within name records; and (4) prospects for the future.
