Stories from the Center: Connecting Narrative and Theory in the Writing Center.
Briggs, Lynn Craigue, Ed.; Woolbright, Meg, Ed.
Through a series of nine narrative essays, this book explores the stories that writing center directors and tutors encounter in their work with students. The essays in the book look at various aspects of the writing center, including how tutors meet and work with students; how tutors interact with students whose opinions and political beliefs are different from their own; how tutors work with students whose instructors use methods that contrast with a tutor's; and how administrative structures frame and define the goals of a writing center. Essays in the book also examine the use of narrative in academic writing. After an introduction by the editors, essays in the book are: (1) "A Story from the Center about Intertextuality and Incoherence" (Lynn Craigue Briggs); (2)"Intellectual Tug-of-War: Snapshots of Life in the Center" (Elizabeth H. Boquet); (3) "Marginal Comments on Writers' Texts: The Status of the Commenter as a Factor in Writing Center Tutorials" (Patricia A. Dunn); (4) "Tutoring in the 'Contact Zone'" (Janice M. Wolff); (5) "Negotiating the 'Subject' of Composition: Writing Centers as Spaces of Productive Possibilities" (Stephen Davenport Jukuri); (6) "Disruptions, Differences, and Bakhtin's Dialogic" (Laura Rogers and Carolyn A. Statler); (7) "If You Have Ghosts" (Michael Blitz and C. Mark Hurlbert); (8) "Carnal Conferencing: Personal Computing and the Ideation of a Writing Center" (Joseph Janangelo); and (9) "Decentering Student-Centeredness: Rethinking Tutor Authority in Writing Centers" (Catherine G. Latterell). (Each essay contains references.) (RS)
