Encountering Maryland's Past. Volume 2: Turning Points in History. A Primary Source Kit from the Maryland Historical Society.
Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore.
This primary source kit supports the study of history in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each primary source selected for the kit, whether it be a photograph, a broadside, a map, or a private letter, reflects a meaningful part of Maryland and U.S. history. The kit provides educators with an opportunity to use primary documents from Maryland history with activities that support performance instruction; it can be used to teach economics, political science, civics, geography, and other facets of social studies. The kit is divided into the following sections: (1) "An Introduction to the Primary Source Kit"; (2) "Key to the Primary Source Icons"; (3) "The Top Ten" for Elementary School Students; (4) "Correlation of Sources with MSPAP and Core Learning Goals for Social Studies"; and (5) "Primary Sources and Context Pages." The kit may be used to introduce new topics in the curriculum; to facilitate discussion in the classroom; to capture students' interest by looking at issues through a "local lens"; to develop and refine students' analytical and problem-solving skills; to encourage students to carry out historical research; and to initiate National History Day projects.
