Selecting Students for Mathematics and Science: The Challenge Facing Higher Education in South Africa.
The selection of students is one of the critical issues facing higher education institutions in South Africa. Identifying disadvantaged students with mathematics and science aptitude is a particularly pressing problem. The UNIFY Selection Research Project (USRP) was established at the University of the North in 1994 to address this problem. This book describes the research done during the USRP. Chapter 2 describes selection for higher education in South Africa. The use of the term 'disadvantaged' in this work is explained in chapter 3. The implications of the previous higher education legislation and the new 1996 South African Constitution, as well as the 1997 Higher Education Act for participant selection, are discussed in chapter 4. Chapter 5 discusses predictors of academic performance. The USRP is introduced in chapter 6, and research results are discussed in chapters 7 and 8. (Contains 174 references.) (ASK)
