This final report describes activities and accomplishments of the South Dakota Deaf-Blind Project, a 4-year federally funded project designed to raise awareness of the need for early identification of children who are deaf-blind and reside on Native American reservation lands. To this end, the states of Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota joined together as the Great Plans Regional Alliance. Using strategies utilized successfully on reservations in South Dakota, the member states began making connections with Native American families. A major goal of the project was to increase the number of Native American children on the deaf-blind census. Every state increased the number of Native American children on their census, and each state reported a significant increase in the number of referrals received from reservation areas. Specific activities of the project are described, and include: public service announcements using Lakota people and language; culturally based posters and brochures; videos highlighting the deaf-blind clinic and other training issues for children who are deaf-blind; the initiation of a tracking system to ensure that families crossing state borders are able to access services; and training opportunities for children who are deaf-blind and their families.
