Writing Assessment: Rhode Island State Assessment Program. Guide to Interpretation [and] Interpretation Guide for Families Grades 3, 7, and 10.

In 1999, Rhode Island students in grades 3, 7, and 10 took a performance assessment in writing as part of the Rhode Island State Assessment Program. These two documents, a guide for educators and a guide for parents, describe the test and its scoring. The test is called a performance assessment because it requires the students to demonstrate their ability to write an essay in response to a suggested topic. As such, it is a test of writing skills in standard English. The "Guide to Interpretation" contains information for educators in the following chapters: (1) "Background"; (2) "Purpose"; (3) "The Writing Tests"; (4) "Scoring Process"; (5) "Use of Test Results"; (6) "Elements of an Effective Writing Classroom"; and (7) "Summary." Five appendixes contain writing samples, a sample performance report, a writing process diagram, a description of the scoring teams, and a list of annotated resources. The "Interpretation Guide for Families, Grades 3, 7, and 10" explains the performance assessment to parents and contains writing samples for the three grades. (SLD)
