Alabama Moments in American History: Supplemental Materials for High School Teachers.
The broad themes of U.S. history usually have specific expressions in Alabama. Specific examples of history close by can enrich the teaching of U.S. history. This packet of materials was prepared to assist teachers in establishing the link between national issues and the local examples. The packet contains supplemental information about each of the Alabama concepts identified in the "Alabama Course of Study: Social Studies" by an Alabama map icon as a required content standard or example. For convenience, the packet refers to each of these as an "Alabama Moment." The components of each "Moment" may vary, but generally each contains the following elements: Quick Summary (one page summary of the essential points for quick reference); Details (a longer, more detailed explanation of the topic written by a scholar); Selected Annotated Bibliography; Primary Sources (documents such as letters, diary excerpts, maps, graphs, and illustrations) which can be used in the classroom to enrich the study of this topic; and Suggestions/Activities (other suggested activities to enrich the teaching of this topic, including class projects, research topics, field trips, videos, or web sites). The packet also includes basic Alabama maps and a cassette tape of historical Alabama music to enrich the classroom experience. (BT)
