Families at School: A Guide for Educators.

This guide describes an exemplary program at Niagara Falls, Canada, Secondary School where parents and children use literacy to strengthen their reading and writing abilities while building stronger family relationships. Parents in the program--many of whom have had negative school experiences--learn about early childhood development, discuss children's literature and reading strategies, and create literacy activities to try with their children. They also focus on parenting, sharing concerns, and working on problem-solving skills. All the while, the parents use and develop their own literacy abilities through activities designed around their commitment to helping their young children grow and learn--in this program, the focus is on the children. The guide describes this exemplary program from its early development and recruitment efforts through its current curriculum. It includes background information on family literacy, suggestions for establishing a family literacy program, and ideas about program structure. Also included are sample lesson plans, lists of recommended books and resources, suggested classroom activities, examples of parents' work, and numerous student handouts.
