Professional Counseling: Transitioning into the Next Millennium.
Dixon, Charlotte G., Ed.; Emener, William G., Ed.
The purpose of this book is to attempt to forecast the future of professional counseling as it transitions into the next millennium. It is designed to help professional counselors understand and prepare for future changes in the profession of counseling. Understanding the rationale and observable predictors of anticipated changes meaningfully facilitates and enriches the efficiency and effectiveness of professional counseling services. The expertise of professional counselors, counselor educators, and scholars throughout the United States and abroad was enlisted in order to complete the task of writing this book. Some of the projections herein are supported by statistical and empirical data. However, many others are based on the knowledge, personal experience, intuitions, and gut feelings of professionals throughout the counseling community. Chapters include: (1) "Professional Counseling: Evolution, Current Status, and Beyond" (Rollins, Garcia, and Thomas); (2) "Managed Care and Privatization in Counseling and Rehabilitation" (Alston and Harley); (3) "Special Technology for the Next Millennium" (Riggar and Janikowski); (4) "Assistive Technologies" (Falvo); (5) "Ethical Issues in the 21st Century" (Patterson); (6) "Future Trends in Selected Systems" (Arnaldi and Simon); (7) "Emerging Populations and Issues in the Next Millennium" (Dixon, Amuso, and Stozier); (8) "Diversity Watch for the New Millennium: Reversing the Tide of Exclusion" (Stadler, Middleton, and King); (9) "International Vistas for Counseling" (Leung and Emener); and (10) "The Human Side of Health Care in the New Millennium" (Janes and Emener). (Each chapter contains an extensive list of references, 328 references overall. Includes author and subject indexes.) (GCP)
