The outcomes and impacts of adult literacy education in the United States were examined through a qualitative assessment of the pertinent research conducted since the late 1960s. A comprehensive literature search was used to identify; the most credible outcomes and impacts studies, and case studies were prepared for these. This document contains the abstracts of 46 studies used in this assessment. Each abstract begins with the following bibliographic information: author(s) or institution(s) or editor(s); year of publication; title; publisher; and ERIC Document Reproduction Service Number, if applicable. The body of the abstract is divided into the following categories: purpose; variables; population; design; data collection; instrumentation; findings; strengths; and weaknesses. (YLB)
