Workplace and Institute Accredited Training. Costs and Satisfaction.

A case study approach was used to examine various models of technical and further education (TAFE) accredited training, with particular focus on comparative costs and student satisfaction. Literature on costing and satisfaction was reviewed. Case studies were drawn from the retail, hospitality, and automotive industries. Two comparable courses were identified from each industry area, one of them workplace-based and the other TAFE institute-based. A sample of students/trainees from each organization was surveyed by questionnaire to provide information on satisfaction levels with the various delivery modes and expenditure on training; 3-4 from each course were interviewed. Cost findings showed delivery in the workplace can allow for reduced cost of formal, structured tuition; providing workplace trainees with support from a coach or mentor incurs considerable costs; arranging workplace training for large groups may not be as easy as for small groups; and cost to companies of providing structured on-the-job training can be offset by trainees' unpaid work and the opportunity to assess trainees for possible employment. Findings indicated no evidence of less satisfaction with cheaper courses and very little difference in student/trainee satisfaction levels between industries or between TAFE and workplace-based delivery modes. TAFE students were less satisfied with the cost of their training than were workplace-based students. All highly valued practical application of the learning.
