Labour Market Information for Higher Education: A Guide. IES Report 363.
Maginn, Andrew; Dench, Sally
This guide is written for people in British higher education institutions (HEIs) who use, or would like to use, regional and local labor market information (LMI) in strategic, operational, and business planning. It is also designed for agencies who commission and produce regional and local labor market, skills, and economic reports. Chapter 1 details for whom the guide is intended and provides background on why LMI has become more important to HEIs. Chapter 2 describes what LMI is, with examples of the sorts of information HIE planners need. It is a fairly basic description, designed for those who are new to labor market analysis or who do not use LMI often. Chapter 3 reviews the main reasons why HEIs use LMI, with examples and recommendations on good practice. Chapter 4 explains a typical regional or local labor market report from the perspective of an HEI planner. Detailed recommendations are made, which HEIs can use to improve the relevance of LMI they receive from local and regional organizations. Chapter 5 reviews briefly the material currently available at national, regional, and local levels and then makes recommendations on which sources are essential and others that can provide a useful background. Appendixes include a glossary of terms and acronyms, a list of 44 resource organizations, and illustrations of higher education sector data. (YLB)
