Historic Cemeteries: Where Stones Talk. A Lesson Plan for Third and Fourth Grade Elementary Students.
Intended for third and fourth grade classes in southern Oregon, this lesson plan uses historic cemeteries to implement a current social studies curriculum. The premise of the lesson plan is that, as places where history, landscape, the natural world, art, and the community meet, cemeteries make rich resources for classroom study. The lesson plan contains a short video and a curriculum packet, and although the material has been designed for use with a site visit, it is readily adaptable when field travel is impractical. The activities outlined in the lesson plan contain projects for use: (1) as a preliminary site visit (or when there is no site visit); (2) during a site visit; and (3) following the site visit. The lesson plan is divided into the following sections: "Introduction";"Objectives for the Students"; "Historic Overview"; "Teaching Activities"; "Activities"; "Glossary/Vocabulary"; "Further Reading"; "Appendix A: Student Handouts"; "Appendix B: Cemeteries in Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath Counties"; "Appendix C: Some Pioneer People Buried in Eastwood/I.O.O.F. Cemetery"; "Appendix D: Common Headstone Shapes"; "Appendix E: Common Symbols in Historic Cemeteries"; "Appendix F: Visual Materials for Eastwood/I.O.O.F. Cemetery"; "Appendix G: Cemetery Safety and Etiquette"; "Appendix H: Gravestone Rubbing Instructions"; "Appendix I: Mathematics Activities Forms"; "Appendix J: Nature Activity Forms"; "Appendix K: Map Form"; "Appendix L: History Project Forms"; "Bibliography"; and "References for Further Research."
