An action research project, the aim of which was to bring powerful mathematics to females to help them develop a clear conceptual understanding and passion for the subject, and to nurture independent learning skills that will translate into all aspects of their lives, is discussed. This book investigated one strategy for providing girls with examples of hardy female personalities through young problem solvers found in children's literature. These characters can act as springboards to mathematics lessons as teachers link these feisty females to mathematical activities. Classroom strategies are illustrated reflecting those suggested through research as essential to educational equity in mathematics education. (ASK)
