Coming into Her Own: Educational Success in Girls and Women.
Davis, Sara N., Ed.; Crawford, Mary, Ed.; Sebrechts, Jadwiga, Ed.
This book outlines approaches to teaching and learning that can address the diverse needs of students of different genders, races, ethnicities, classes, ages, and sexual orientations. The text focuses on strategies that optimize women's educational experiences, particularly education that is women-centered, and the attendant strategies that positively influence that educational experience. The book combines theoretical positions and practical strategies for implementing new pedagogies and attitudes. It explores feminist issues in the classroom, on campuses, and in individual relationships. The volume is divided into four parts. Part 1, "Women-Centered Education," examines women's studies and looks at the benefits of attending a women's college. Part 2, "Restructuring the Classroom," then moves to a presentation of classroom dynamics and how they have been transformed by principals and strategies of feminist pedagogy. The examples used here describe actual classroom situations so as to suggest techniques that might readily be used. Part 3, "Transforming Math and Science," looks at classroom experiences that have provided the greatest challenges and that have yielded positive results. The fourth section, "Changing Individual Expectations," describes situations and programs in which students develop their own resources--whether in an advising relationship or in a more formal program. The last part, "Creating Healthy Environments," addresses lesbian, gay, and bisexual students, alcohol use, preventing dating violence, and low-income women. (Includes an index.) (RJM)
