The lesson is based on the National Register of Historic Places registration file, "Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District," as well as several primary and secondary sources. Student objectives and a list of materials are given in the lesson's first section, "About This Lesson." The lesson is divided into the following sections: (1) "Setting the Stage: Historical Context"; (2) "Locating the Site: Maps" (subdivided into "Civil War Battles in Maryland and Virginia" and "Both Armies during the Battle"); (3) "Determining the Facts: Readings" (subdivided into "Three Days of Carnage at Gettysburg"; "Perspectives of the Participants"; and "The Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863"); (4) "Visual Evidence: Images"; (5) "Putting It All Together: Activities" (subdivided into "Putting Yourself in the Shoes of a Civil War Soldier"; "Comparing Perspectives"; and "Persuasive Writing and Speaking"); and "Supplementary Resources."
