Improving Student Motivation, Parent Communication, and Assessment While Implementing a Portfolio Program.

This action research project implemented and evaluated a portfolio program for assessing student performance. The targeted population consisted of elementary and middle grade students in two schools. The inadequacy of traditional evaluation methods was documented by means of parent and staff surveys. Common discrepancies were found in student performance on traditional measures versus ability, and a weak relation was found between curriculum and test content. A portfolio assessment program was implemented in the two schools; the program included scoring rubrics, student reflections, peer and parent conferences, and parent and staff surveys. Post intervention data indicated an increase in individualized planning, student motivation, parent communication, and assessment of student growth as a result of the portfolio assessment program.
