The Multicultural Worlds of Childhood in Postmodern America.

The multicultural worlds of childhood in postmodern American present challenges and opportunities for the early childhood curriculum. This chapter explores the historical context of multicultural America and the possibility of an early childhood critical multicultural curriculum with "border crossings," or transversing subject-area disciplinary boundaries. The chapter discusses salient multicultural theoretical paradigms capable of informing the field and reviews how selected children's literature is organized around issues of multiculturalism. The chapter explores how America's historical context relates to multiculturalism and the early childhood education curriculum and maintains that, in spite of civil rights progress, hate group organizations remain an integral part of the United States. A variety of theories of multicultural education and about multiculturalism are examined for their capability of informing early childhood education, including an anthropological perspective, the cultural invasion process, the threshold hypothesis, issues of power, various approaches to multicultural education, the role of social action, ethnicity theory, and typologies of multiculturalism. The chapter also identifies and explores five areas of research and literature applicable to multiculturalism and young children: (1) child development; (2) qualitative interpretive research; (3) bilingual/bicultural research; (4) advocacy research and literature; and (5) reconceptualizing models. Finally, the chapter considers how early childhood education can advocate for equity and social justice and describes selected Native American children's literature that can help ameliorate the concerns that competitive, consumer-driven childrearing practices have produced. The chapter concludes by noting that a spirit of mutual caring is key to eliminating many complex problems children face. (Contains approximately 90 references.) (KB)
