The aim of this report is to inform policymakers and educators about the current status of key education policies across the 50 states that define and shape elementary and secondary education in public schools. The fifth in a series, this report contains policy information for the 50 states and 5 extra-state jurisdictions as of spring 1998. It reports on policy trends concerning time and attendance, content standards, credits for high school graduation, teacher licensure, and student assessment. In 1998, expanded information is provided on graduation requirements, teacher assessment, recommended textbooks and curriculum materials, professional development, and school leader/administrator licensure. Appendixes discuss the use of teacher standards in teacher education and the use of standards on the education of school leaders and administrators. (Contains 26 tables.) (SLD)
