Initial Findings on the Benchmarks Pilot Project for the Nova Southeastern University Undergraduate Education Program.
Griffin, David; LeBlanc, Patrice; McConnell, Twyla
This paper summarizes the initial evaluation results of a pilot project conducted to implement program benchmarks for Nova Southeastern University's Undergraduate Teacher Education Program in Elementary Education. The program benchmarks are a response to the national movement toward standards to ensure teacher effectiveness. They serve as checkpoints to assess students' progress toward developing teaching effectiveness. The paper briefly describes the Elementary Education Program, its benchmarks, and the mentoring process used in the pilot project. A formal evaluation design of the pilot project used a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design, which was supplemented by an informal evaluation process. Pre-program questionnaires were given to elementary education majors who participated in the benchmarks and mentoring process and to control group students. The pre-program questionnaires showed no significant differences between the two groups. A summary of questionnaire and informal evaluation results are reported. Initial findings identify areas for program improvement and indicate that the mentoring process is valuable to students. From the findings, recommendations were made. (Contains 18 references.)
