Activities for Elementary School Social Studies.
Stockard, James W., Jr.
This book presents a variety of social studies activities for elementary students. The activities are divided into broad social science disciplines but can be adapted to an interdisciplinary format. The activities are wide-ranging in ability level and complexity but can be modified to fit any teaching need. Each activity follows the same format with the listing of topic, grade level, activity time, materials needed, objectives, introduction, major instructional sequence, and closure or evaluation. The book is divided into seven chapters including: (1) "Geography Activities"; (2) "History Activities"; (3) "Anthropology Activities"; (4) "Sociology Activities"; (5) "Economics Activities"; (6) "Political Science Activities"; and (7) "Interdisciplinary Activities." An appendix offers an annotated bibliography of children's books for teaching social studies, additional resources for teachers, the 10 thematic strands for teaching social studies with performance objectives for students, and suggestions for creating lesson plans and unit plans.
