The Literacy Assessment Portfolio.

The Class Size/Early Intervention Program in Iowa includes documentation of successful early literacy development as a component of a program to support maximum success for young children. This document is designed to support educators in identifying literacy assessment tools for kindergarten through third grade in Iowa public schools. The specific instruments detailed in this document were identified by the Iowa DE/AEA Early Childhood Network. Included in the portfolio are: (1) definitions for the criteria used to evaluate assessment instruments; (2) a grid of several diagnostic assessment instruments that met the criteria used by the Early Childhood Network to identify appropriate early childhood diagnostic literacy assessments; (3) a blank grid for use in evaluating other instruments; (4) a descriptive profile of each of the diagnostic assessment instruments that met the criteria for appropriate early childhood literacy assessments; (5) a synthesis of the research on literacy development in young children; (6) a synthesis of the research on assessment of young children; and (7) a document describing the Class Size/Early Intervention Program.
