The Chicago Handbook for Teachers: A Practical Guide to the College Classroom.
Brinkley, Alan; Dessants, Betty; Flamm, Michael; Fleming, Cynthia; Forcey, Charles; Rothschild, Eric
This book is designed to offer practical advice to beginning, as well as experienced, teachers of college courses on navigating many of the common challenges faced both in and outside the classroom. Chapters include "Getting Ready," which covers three discrete components of course design: deciding what you want students to learn, choosing effective course materials, and creating a clear and informative syllabus; "The First Weeks" (classroom dynamics and dealing with passive and disruptive students); "Classroom Discussions" (debates, panel discussions, and other forms of collaborative learning); "The Art and Craft of Lecturing" (preparing, delivering, and encouraging student participation); "Student Writing and Research" (independent projects, setting standards and deadlines, dealing with plagiarism, evaluation and grading); "Testing and Evaluation" (planning for examination, preparing students for exams, missed examinations, constructing exams, cheating, grading); "Evaluating Your Teaching" (forms of evaluation, constructing and administering evaluations, using intermediaries, responding to evaluations, finding campus teaching resources); "Teaching as a Graduate Student" (relationships with professors and students, resolving student disputes, plagiarism and cheating, ethical dilemmas); and "Teaching Inclusively in a Multicultural Age" (challenges and opportunities of diversity, political correctness). A final chapter offers information on electronic teaching resources. An afterword notes some of the rewards of teaching. (Contains approximately 75 references.) (CH)
