How To Raise Test Scores. K-College.
Fogarty, Robin
This booklet illustrates proven instructional strategies to help teachers help students raise their test scores. Techniques are outlined that will help students improve their communication skills, learn how to mediate their thinking strategies, and understand the best way to attack a question. The advice is developed in the structure of an acronym. Every letter in the phrase "Test Scores" represents the first letter of a technique educators can use. The techniques are: (1) "Teach for the test, not to the test"; (2) "Expect the best; accept no less"; (3) "Structure with cooperative learning"; (4) "Teach test-taking strategies explicitly"; (5) "Stress prelearning strategies"; (6) "Chunk the material for deep understanding"; (7) "Organize with graphics"; (8) "Reflect through mediation"; (9) "Express ideas with mnemonic devices and visual cues"; and (10) "Seek student choices in learning situations." (Contains 28 references.) (SLD)
