TABS Manual for the Temperament and Atypical Behavior Scale: Early Childhood Indicators of Developmental Dysfunction.
Neisworth, John T.; Bagnato, Stephen J.; Salvia, John; Hunt, Frances M.
This manual describes the rationale, use, and validity of the Temperament and Atypical Behavior Scale (TABS), a norm-referenced measure of dysfunctional behavior appropriately used with infants and young children between the ages of 11 and 71 months. TABS is intended to identify children who are developing atypically or are at risk for atypical development. In addition, TABS data can indicate specific areas of concern and can be the basis for planning early intervention programs. On the TABS Assessment Tool, atypical self-regulatory behavior is assessed by 55 items in areas such as temperament, attention, attachment, social behavior, play, vocal and oral behavior, senses and movement, self-stimulation and self-injury, and neurobehavioral state. Four psychometric factors underlie the 55 items and are arranged into four subtests: detached, hyper-sensitive/active, underreactive, and dysregulated. Chapters of the manual provide an overview of TABS, outline a rationale and research basis for the scale, provide instructions for using TBS, discuss reliability and validity, and offer interventions for many of the behaviors identified with TABS. The appendix includes a list of agencies and organizations contributing to the TABS sample as well as a conversion table used in scoring the assessment tool. A test is attached.
