Teacher with a Heart: Reflections on Leonard Covello and Community. Between Teacher and Text [Series].
Leonard Covello's memoir, "The Heart Is the Teacher" (1958), contained the history of an urban community school, Benjamin Franklin Community High School in East Harlem (New York). The school was concerned with academics and the special needs of immigrant children. The first section reflects on Covello's work and his community. The second section contains selections from Covello's work. The problems Covello faced are still urgent needs of urban schools today. (SLD)
