The U.S.-Mexican War (1846-1848). [Curriculum Package].
Boardman, Andrea
This teacher's guide accompanies the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) four episode videotape documentary about the U.S.-Mexican War (1846-1848). The documentary tells the story of a war that transformed a continent; and a war in which Mexico lost almost half of its national territory to the United States. The guide introduces the documentary's major themes through 4 lessons which focus on the social, cultural, and economic forces that shaped each country and its peoples during that crucial era. The curriculum covers the sweep of the war from multiple perspectives of Americans, Mexicans, and Native Americans, and considers how the war's outcome not only transformed the boundaries of Mexico and the United States, but also shifted the balance of world powers and shaped the destinies of each nation. The package contains a teaching guide; a video segment index; maps of Mexico and the United States during the war's era and maps of present-day Mexico and the United States; and the U.S.-Mexican War classroom resource and student activities packages (including an answer key for the teacher). A reference for the U.S.-Mexican War PBS web site is provided. The accompanying video segment index references when a key event, organization, or person is featured in the video. The index contains alphabetical and subject indexes. Within the teaching guide is a section of classroom tips for using any video chapter, as well as information on links between the curriculum standards of the National Council for the Social Studies.
