Art in Story: Teaching Art History to Elementary School Children.
Integrated art history and language arts activities are presented in this curriculum guide. The art history content is chronologically organized by units: (1) "Art of the Ancient World"; (2) "Arts of the East and Africa"; (3) "Art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance"; (4) "Five European Masters"; (5) "Impressionism and Post-Impressionism"; (6) "The Art of America"; (7) "The Art of Mexico"; and (8) "Art of the Twentieth Century." Each unit begins with background information for the teacher followed by lessons that include a children's story about the art or artist being studied. Teachers are instructed to begin each lesson by telling students the story. This is to be followed by art viewing, journal writing, and art making activities. Suggestions for these activities are given. Ideas for interdisciplinary activities and an annotated list of references conclude each lesson. Appendices give information relevant to "Using the Internet to Study Art" and "Sources for Audiovisual Materials." A general bibliography and index conclude the text. (MM)
