Standing on the Precipice: Alternative Forms of Collaborative Inquiry and Data Representation.
Shinew, Dawn M.
This paper describes a study in which a group of women addresses challenges from feminist and postmodern theories regarding the concept of citizenship in social studies education. The purpose was to generate a public discourse on what it means to educate for democratic citizenship. The eclectic research methodology that resulted also laid the foundation for an alternative form of data representation. The study had both a substantive and methodological component. The paper describes the research process, proposes the criteria for evaluating the quality of alternative forms of data representation, and discusses the implications of this process for educational research. An appendix provides a brief excerpt of the story created from the data. Includes 5 notes and 75 references. (BT)
