The Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom: Easy Ways To Adapt Learning Centers for All Children.

Although the inclusion model is widely accepted as the best way to educate young children with special needs, many teachers and childcare providers have little training in working with children with special needs and are not familiar with how to integrate children with disabilities into the classroom. This book is a resource manual on how to adapt regular curriculum activities for children with special needs. The book is organized according to type of activity, with chapters devoted to circle time, art centers, sand and water center, block center, dramatic play, snack time, transitions, fine motor centers, and gross motor center. Each chapter is divided into six disability categories that are based partly on medical diagnoses and partly on how each disability affects the child's ability to learn and function. The categories are: (1) mental handicaps and developmental delays; (2) orthopedic impairments; (3) ADHD and behavioral issues; (4) pervasive developmental disorder or autism; (5) motor planning problems; and (6) visual impairments. Included are checklists to assist teachers and caregivers in determining which disability grouping best corresponds to a particular child. The book's appendix describes the sensory needs of children, positioning guidelines, and augmentative communication, contains directions for making simple adaptations, and lists commercially available materials.
