Simple Steps: Developmental Activities for Infants, Toddlers, and Two-Year-Olds.
Miller, Karen
This book for caregivers and parents provides over 300 activities based on the developmental needs of infants, toddlers, and 2-year-olds. The book describes key developmental stages to assist caregivers in identifying developmentally appropriate activities. Following an introductory chapter, the book is organized by developmental domains. Each chapter describes the significance of that particular domain, factors influencing development in that area, and the typical progression of skills. Individual chapters are devoted to the following areas: (1) social-emotional development; (2) language development and early literacy; (3) fine motor development; (4) gross motor development; (5) cognitive development; (6) music and movement development; (7) sensory development; (8) nature activities; (9) creative development; (10) dramatic play; (11) setting up a positive learning environment; (12) dealing with behavior in groups; (13) curriculum development; and (14) working with parents. Within each chapter, activities are organized in chronological order and contain the following information: (1) necessary materials; (2) activity description; (3) questions for observing the child's behavior during the activity; (4) additional ideas related to the activity; and (5) emerging skills related to the activity. The book's appendix focuses on developing training workshops for teachers and caregivers, and includes a sample workshop outline. (KB)
